Synopsis

First published in 1913, A Preface to Politics by Walter Lippmann is a significant contribution to modern political thought, examining the limitations of conventional political institutions, established ideologies, and traditional approaches to governance. Lippmann challenges the tendency to treat politics as a mechanical process governed by fixed rules, moral judgments, and inherited assumptions. Instead, he advocates a more imaginative, pragmatic, and human-centered understanding of political life.

Through discussions of political leadership, social reform, public opinion, institutional change, and the relationship between individual aspirations and collective interests, Lippmann emphasizes the importance of adapting political practices to evolving social realities. His analysis highlights the shortcomings of rigid political doctrines and calls for creative leadership capable of responding to emerging challenges.

More than a century after its original publication, A Preface to Politics remains relevant to contemporary debates surrounding democracy, governance, political communication, and institutional accountability. Its insights encourage readers to reconsider how political systems respond to social transformation and how democratic leadership can move beyond established conventions.

Published under The Classic Series by DScholar Press International, this edition includes a new preface by Dr. Saurabh Chandra, situating Lippmann's arguments within contemporary discussions of democracy and political life. The volume offers students, researchers, political thinkers, and general readers an opportunity to engage critically with an influential work of twentieth-century political literature.
