Understanding Edited Books and Edited Volumes

In academic publishing, edited books and edited volumes serve as important formats for disseminating collaborative scholarly work. While both involve multiple authors under editorial guidance, they differ in structure and integration.

Note: Edited books and volumes may be categorized as: Peer-Reviewed Books, Non-Peer-Reviewed Books, Peer-Reviewed Conference Proceedings, or Non-Peer-Reviewed Conference Proceedings.

Edited Book

  • Single unified academic theme
  • Contributions by different authors on one idea or theme
  • Strong editorial integration
  • Conceptually linked chapters
  • Structured like a monograph

Edited Volume

  • Independent chapter contributions
  • Contribution by different authors on different ideas or themes
  • Broad thematic scope
  • Less strict integration
  • Common in conference proceedings
